Lithography Explanation

Limestone?

For lithography, as we said, you need a block of limestone. Yes, this is limestone. Or rather a limestone surface. Or actually an extremely simplified representation of limestone which is, after all, mostly calcium carbonate.

We won't go into the detail of how you physically prepare the surface except to say it is a rather exacting and somewhat laborious process. But not as laborious as lithography naysayers forebode. A stone about 15" X 10" can be "grained" (as the cognsocenti call it) in an hour, maybe an hour and a half.
