"At the Tomb of Tutankhamen", Maynard Williams, National Geographic Magazine, May, 1923.

For a bit of the contemporary flavor, this is a good article to read. But there's really very little about Tut in the text. Mostly it's the correspondent telling you what he did as he spent most of his time cooling his heels like other reporters who didn't work for the Times. Most interestingly, it reveals it was open knowledge that someone had poked a hole in the burial chamber before the official opening 55 years before Thomas Hoving revealed it in his book.
