Bronze Casting - Step 18
Cutting the Sprues
S'awright. We've skipped a couple of steps. Mainly, pouring the bronze into the mold (and letting it cool) and knocking off the shell. Then - as we see here - you have to trim off the grid work, sprues, and vents. As you can see, the proper acoutrements and protective gear must be worn. Then you begin the long, arduous, and boring task of getting the rest of the little bits of shell wedged in the nooks and crannies off the surface of the metal.
Cartainly casting your own bronze is a good way to understand why artists like Rodin had so many apprentices and paid others to do the hard work.
