Yes, yes, it's probably too much to expect everyone to know about Bill and his dogface GI characters, Willie and Joe. After all, when Bill got married in 1972, his young wife hadn't heard of them either. But on VE Day, May 8, 1945, Bill Mauldin, the soldier cartoonist, was one of the most famous people in the world.
