Carl August Rudolph Steinmetz was a scientist and engineer who was at one time was every bit as famous as Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. And Carl's fame endured for decades after his death in 1923. Even kids knew who he was, and there was a television show about him.
But today and despite a detailed biography written in the 1990's, if you ask Joe or Josephine Blow on the street who Charles Proteus Steinmetz was, they'll say, "Oh, yeah. Wasn't he the announcer on Jeopardy?"
