When the Big Band Era - also called the Swing Era - began is a bit obscure. Some place the beginning as early as 1920; others as late as 1935.
But everyone pretty much agrees the Big Band Era ended with the close of World War II. Of course, Big Bands were still around for decades after and in fact are still around today.
But the Harry James Orchestra (the word "band" was a bit low-brow) ended up having a unique place in the era, albeit for a short period of time. And that place has a lot to do with one of Harry's short-term employees, whose appearance helped both elevate the Big Bands to greater heights of popularity but also brought the Era to its screeching halt.
And of course, you know who that was.
Ha? (To quote Shakespeare.) You don't?
