Kirk Douglas was one of the most iconic actors of the 20th century. And he played one of the most iconic roles of one of the most iconic figures in history.
The trouble is Spartacus is just a little too iconic. As with José Martí, everybody considers him a hero. Old style Marxists love him as much as mid-20th century American capitalists.
But remember, Kirk Douglas was not Spartacus and the movie takes considerable liberties with the few facts we have about the ex-gladiator who rebelled against Rome. Certainly it's unlikely Spartacus had a dimple in his chin - at least not one of such prominence that prompted Kirk himself to comment, "Dimple? It's a hole!
