Except for the fact that Lou Gehrig was one of the best baseball players ever and that he bore the encroaching amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (now almost universally referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease) with dignity and courage, Lou led a very boring life. He didn't drink to excess (except rarely), fiddle around, or take punches at umpires (but he did argue with them). Lou came from a supportive family, attended Columbia University on an athletic scholarship, married happily, and although he may have felt he played second base (no joke intended) to Babe Ruth - who did drink to excess, fiddle around, and at least on one occasion took a punch at an umpire - he was still idolized by the fans.
