Zora Neale Hurston studied anthropology at Barnard and Columbia University, did research on survival of West African religion in the Americas, wrote a number of best selling books (including the personal CooperToons favorite Tell My Horse), and wrote a play in collaboration with poet Langston Hughes which proved controversial.
