Ostrich

Ostrich

An ostrich with attitude from one of the various US Zoos. Rendered in charcoal on a particularly high weight and heavy toothed paper.

The ostrich is (today) the world's largest bird. In days of yore there were larger birds, both in height and weight. Elephant birds were the heaviest at over a 1000 pounds, and the Giant Moa, the tallest (12 feet). These were, in essence, extra large ostriches, although zoologist may quibble with this characterization.

Today the ostrich is found in the wild but also raised on farms, even in the US. Sometimes if you drive through some of the western states you can see herds of ostriches off in the fields. A ridiculous sight.
