Pelican

Probably the most slandered bird ever, you will hear in many places that the notorious prison Alcatraz is named after the noble pelican. La isla de los alcatraces means, we read, the island of the pelicans.

Los siento, amigos. The Spanish word for pelican is pelícano and la alcatraz or the plural las alcatraces is Spanish for the sea bird called in English the gannet. Not the same bird, not by a long shot.
