The pygmy falcon - Polihierax semitorquatus - lives in eastern and southwest Africa. As the name suggests, they are small, not more than eight inches long. Despite their apparent vulnerability, they are among the few wild animals in Africa that are not considered endangered or threatened.
Unlike many species, it's the female who is most colorful. She has a red-brown plumage between her wings while the corresponding area on the male is grey. This acrylic painting - using a slow drying acrylic - is of the female.
