Muddy Waters

You would think that Muddy Waters is a stage name and that his friends would call him by a childhood moniker based on his real name, McKinley Morganfield. Maybe "Mac" or "Morg".

Well, yes and no. "Waters" was a later addition after Young McKinley began performing. But he was called Muddy even as a kid. Naturally the stories how he gained the moniker vary a bit. But a friend who knew McKinley said he was so dubbed by his grandmother. In turn, Muddy had a nickname for his friend which was based on his manner of greeting.
