Temple Houston
A Man for At Least One Season
When the 1960's started up, there were 30 prime time Western television shows and no sign of let-up. The problem was finding enough western heroes to fill the demand for more.
So in 1963, the American audiences were treated to a show about the life and times of Temple Houston. Temple was a lawyer who helped the poor and downtrodden and fought the bad guys both with the law books and the gun.
Unlike the Cartwrights, Marshal Dillon, Paladin, and Rowdy Yates, Temple Houston had been a real person. He had practiced law in Texas starting in 1880, went into politics, and later moved to what was then Oklahoma Territory. During his lifetime Temple was quite famous and had his name and doings reported in newspapers literally from coast to coast.
But when the Millenium turned - that is the 1901 Millenium - Temple's fame soon faded and a single-season television show aired more than half a century after his death did little to revive it. So to learn a bit about the real Temple Houston, his fame, and what produced it, just click here.
