If you're a classic movie aficionado, then you know who Emanuel Goldenberg was.
Yes, that was the real name of Edward G. Robinson, whose only rival in his speciality was James Cagney. And that speciality was one of the real oddball genre to hit the silver screen, the gangster movie.
As to why audiences loved to watch a movie where people got bumped off right and left and the hero inevitably got bumped off at the end, that's been a subject of study by psychologist, psychiatrists, and sundry head shrinkers since the studios started cranking them out.
