Bronze Casting - Step 12
The Wax Model - Mother Mold Removed

Bronze Casting

The mold is made, wax poured and cooled, and then the mother mold disassembled. Now you have the inner mold and the wax model.

You can see where wax seeped through the two parts of the inner mold. Not too unusual although a really good mold can have a tighter snugger fit and the shim line is not very noticeable. But CooperToons can vouch witness to a wax pour where a larger sculpture was poured and the wax leaked through the seam of the inner mold and the mother mold to run out on the floor.

An alternative technique is to first brush liquid wax onto the inside of the rubber mold before assembling it into the mother mold. You let the wax cool enough where it is still pliable but doesn't flow and so when the rubber mold is put together the wax squishes together and makes a seal. This is the preferred method for a large sculpture since picking up even a moderate size mold can be not a job for the wimpish (or anyone with back problems).

Now the next step is to get the wax model out of the mold - and intact.
